Historical Background
Apple Computer filed for its trademark on 1 January 1977 and received registration on 1 April 1977. The rainbow-striped apple logo designed by Rob Janoff was chosen to showcase the Apple II's colour display capabilities.
Apple's most consequential UK trademark dispute was the long-running battle with Apple Corps, the Beatles' record label, which began in 1978 and was not fully resolved until 2007 when Apple Inc. acquired all Apple-related trademarks and licensed certain marks back to Apple Corps. The case Apple Corps v Apple Computer [2006] EWHC 996 turned on whether Apple Computer's use of the mark in connection with iTunes breached a 1991 settlement agreement.
