Armitage Shanks has been registered in the UK for sanitary apparatus since the merger of Armitage Ware and Shanks & Co in 1969. Both predecessor companies had Victorian-era heritage, Shanks was founded in Barrhead, Scotland in 1851. The brand became the UK's most recognised name in toilets and bathroom fittings, to the extent that 'Armitage Shanks' is often used colloquially as slang for a toilet.

Brand History & Trademark Analysis
Armitage Ware had produced pottery toilets at its Staffordshire factory since 1817. The Shanks side of the merger traces to John Shanks, who founded a brass foundry in Paisley in 1878. The 1969 merger created the entity now known as Armitage Shanks. Ideal Standard International NV currently holds the ARMITAGE SHANKS trademark.
