Historical Background
British Telecom was introduced as a brand in 1980 and became the official name of Post Office Telecommunications on 1 October 1981 under the British Telecommunications Act 1981. Privatisation followed in 1984 with the largest share offering in British history at that time. The company changed its trading name to "BT" on 2 April 1991.
