Brand History & Trademark Analysis

Coats Group originated with James Clark's 1755 loom equipment and silk thread business in Paisley, Scotland. The Clark and Coats families merged in 1896 to form J&P Coats Ltd, which had a market value of £22 million and 50,000 employees worldwide. Subsequent mergers created Coats Patons (1961) and Coats Viyella (1986). Coats plc now holds approximately 22% of the global sewing thread market.
