Historical Background

Fender's Telecaster guitar was originally called the Broadcaster, but Fender received a cease-and-desist from Gretsch, which owned the "Broadkaster" trademark for drums. The company attempted but failed to trademark the Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Precision Bass body shapes in the US, UK, and Europe, after competitors argued the shapes had been in widespread use for so long that consumers no longer associated them exclusively with Fender. Despite this, Fender successfully registered iconic headstock shapes as trademarks across the EU and Canada.
