Brand History & Trademark Analysis
Marlboro was originally launched in the 1920s as a cigarette marketed specifically to women, with the slogan "Mild as May." Philip Morris repositioned the brand as a masculine product in 1955, introducing the Marlboro Man advertising campaign in 1954. Plain packaging legislation introduced in the UK on 20 May 2016 stripped tobacco companies of the ability to use colour, design, or distinctive typography on their packaging, effectively suppressing the trademark's visual identity on the pack itself.
