Historical Background
Charles Darrow sold the Monopoly game to Parker Brothers in 1935 for a royalty arrangement. Waddingtons was licensed to produce the UK edition in 1936, replacing Atlantic City locations with London streets. The UK version was secretly used during World War II: the British Secret Service worked with Waddingtons to include escape maps, files, and silk currency inside sets distributed to Allied POWs. Hasbro owns the Monopoly trademark globally.
