Historical Background
Pears' transparent glycerine soap formula was developed by Andrew Pears in his Gerrard Street, London, barber shop around 1807. The brand secured one of the earliest UK trademark registrations under the 1875 Act. Thomas J. Barratt, who joined the company in 1865 and became known as "the father of modern advertising," commissioned Millais' painting for £2,200 in 1886, overprinting "Pears' Soap" on the original image with the artist's permission. Hindustan Unilever currently holds the brand in India while Unilever manages the UK mark.
