Historical Background
Persil was invented in Germany in 1907 by Henkel, taking its name from two of its active ingredients: perborate (per-) and silicate (-sil). Lever Brothers registered the UK trademark and began UK production in 1909. Following a post-World War II settlement, Unilever took control of the UK trademark while Henkel retained the German and European marks, creating a split-ownership arrangement where two separate companies use the same mark in different territories. Unilever UK has maintained the Persil trademark continuously since 1909.
