Historical Background
PG Tips was launched by Brooke Bond in 1930 as "Pre-Gestee" tea — marketed as easier to digest — and shortened to PG Tips in 1950. Brooke Bond introduced the PG Tips chimpanzee advertising campaigns in 1956, which ran for 45 years and became one of the longest-running advertising campaigns in UK television history. Unilever acquired Brooke Bond in 1984. In 2007, the chimpanzee characters were replaced by animated apes as public attitudes toward animal performance shifted.
