Historical Background
Thomas Pickford began operating a wagon service between London and the north of England in the mid-17th century. The company became the main contractor for the early canal carrying trade in the 1790s, then adapted to railway freight in the 1840s. Pickfords was nationalised in 1948 as part of British Road Services and privatised again in 1981. Allied Van Lines now owns the Pickfords trademark in the UK.
