Historical Background
Pimlico Plumbers was founded in 1979 by Charlie Mullins, who started the business with £250 and a second-hand van. The company grew to over 400 engineers and became London's largest independent plumbing and building services firm. Mullins sold Pimlico Plumbers to Neighborly in 2021 for a reported £145 million. The Supreme Court case Pimlico Plumbers Ltd v Smith [2018] UKSC 29 confirmed that Gary Smith was a "worker" rather than a self-employed contractor, entitling him to employment rights.
