Historical Background
James Pimm created his No. 1 Cup around 1823 as a house digestif, serving it at Pimm's Oyster Bar near the Bank of England. The drink was sold commercially from 1840, and the formula was industrialised after the business was acquired by Horatio Davies in 1865. Diageo now owns the Pimm's trademark. The brand launched a limited series of numbered cups (No. 2 through No. 6, made with different base spirits) in the twentieth century, though No. 1 remained the dominant commercial expression.
