Historical Background
The Post-it note was invented at 3M by Spencer Silver and Art Fry. Silver accidentally created a low-tack adhesive in 1968; Fry repurposed it in 1973 as a bookmark in his hymnal. The product was launched nationally in the US as "Post-it" in 1980. 3M registered the yellow colour as a trademark in the UK and EU for sticky notes. The canary yellow shade became so closely associated with Post-it that the colour itself acquired secondary meaning in the product category.
