Historical Background
Karl Elsener founded a cutler's workshop in Ibach, Switzerland in 1884 and supplied the Swiss Army with its standard-issue soldier's knife from 1891. He registered the name Victorinox in 1909, honouring his mother Victoria and combining it with "inox" — the French abbreviation for stainless steel. For most of the twentieth century, Victorinox and Wenger were the two official suppliers of the Swiss Army Knife, with the Swiss Army dividing contracts equally between them. Victorinox acquired Wenger in 2005, reuniting the two competing marks under single ownership. The company holds the Victorinox Cross-and-Shield device as a figurative trademark registered in over 100 countries.
