Historical Background
Marcel Bich purchased Laszlo Biro's ballpoint pen patent and refined the manufacturing process using Swiss watchmaking precision, launching the Bic Cristal in 1950. Bic expanded to the UK in August 1958. Bich deliberately dropped the H from his surname to avoid mispronunciation in English-speaking markets. While "biro" has become genericised in the UK as a term for any ballpoint pen, the Bic brand itself has maintained its trademark status.
