Historical Background
Terence Conran founded Habitat on 11 May 1964 on Fulham Road, London. When Habitat expanded to the United States in 1977, the chain could not use the "Habitat" name due to a prior trademark registration and operated instead as "The Conran Shop." Conran reacquired the business in 1980 and took it public in 1981.
