Brand History & Trademark Analysis
Harris Tweed is protected in the UK by an Act of Parliament — the Harris Tweed Act 1993 — and bears the Orb trademark administered by the Harris Tweed Authority. It is one of the few textiles in the world protected by its own legislation. To carry the mark, the tweed must be hand-woven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, using locally dyed and spun virgin wool.

Historical Background
The Orb Trade Mark was granted in October 1910, registered in Class 34 under the Trade Marks Act 1905. The 1993 Harris Tweed Act, passed by the UK Parliament, established the Harris Tweed Authority as a statutory body to oversee production and certification, making Harris Tweed the only textile in the world protected by its own Act of Parliament.
