Historical Background
IKEA was founded in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad. The name is an acronym combining his initials (IK), the family farm Elmtaryd (E), and the village of Agunnaryd (A). The company registered the IKEA logo as a trademark in 1977 and the name itself in 1984. IKEA opened its first UK store in Warrington in 1987 and now holds over 1,200 trademark registrations across more than 70 countries.
