Historical Background
Linklaters was founded in 1838 by John Linklater, who opened a solicitors' office in the City of London. The firm merged with Paines & Co in 1920 and was known as Linklaters & Paines until 1998, when it adopted the single-word Linklaters brand ahead of a major international expansion. Linklaters is one of the five firms collectively described as the Magic Circle of elite UK law firms. The firm was among the first major UK law firms to register its name as a service mark under Class 45 following harmonisation of legal services trademark practice in the 1990s. Linklaters advised on a number of the largest UK mergers and privatisations of the late twentieth century, giving the mark substantial recognition in City financial and legal markets.
