The Visa brand was created in 1976 when the Bank of America's BankAmericard scheme was reorganised as an international consortium and rebranded. The name was chosen by founder Dee Hock because it was recognisable in multiple languages and associated with universally accepted travel documents. Visa Inc. was incorporated as a private membership association until its initial public offering in March 2008, which raised $17.9 billion — at the time the largest IPO in US history. The Visa name and the distinctive blue-white-gold ribbon device are registered separately as word and figurative marks, both of which Visa defends aggressively against confusingly similar marks in financial services.
